As breeding season kicks into high gear, it’s the perfect time to highlight an organization dedicated to ensuring a bright future for retired broodmares. Mareworthy Charities, a 2024 Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) grantee, provides retired mares with the care, support, and opportunities they deserve after their breeding careers.
The Founding of Mareworthy Charities
Mareworthy Charities was inspired by a mare named Worthy of Wings. Co-founder Kyle Rothfus, known as “Kyle the OTTB Mare Guy,” worked with Worthy during the 2019 Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeover. Worthy was retired from racing at age 13 after her 138th race, thanks to the efforts of Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc. Kyle’s experience with Worthy highlighted the need for dedicated programs to support older, often misunderstood mares transitioning from their racing careers. This led to the establishment of Mareworthy Charities, focusing on providing sanctuary and second careers for these deserving horses.
A Safe Haven for Broodmares
Based in Kentucky, Mareworthy Charities offers more than just retirement. The organization’s mission is twofold: to provide sanctuary for broodmares in need and to help them find loving new homes and second careers. Whether they go on to become companions, therapy horses, or riding partners, Mareworthy is dedicated to finding the right fit for each horse.
Retired mares enjoy spacious pastures, individualized care plans, and a supportive environment that allows them to thrive. In addition to physical care, the organization promotes educational and therapeutic opportunities, helping mares transition into new roles as equine ambassadors in the community.
